Somaliland National Day celebration

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are delighted to announce that West London Somaliland Community in collaboration with other Somaliland organisations will be organising this year the celebration of the 18th anniversary of the revival of the Republic of Somaliland.

Somaliland has been a British protectorate for seventy-six years long and achieved a negotiated independence on the 26th of June 1960 from United Kingdom. However, four days later, on the 1st of July 1960, Somaliland formed a union with Somalia, which has gained independence from Italy. The union between the two countries gave birth to the “Somali Republic” which became defunct on the 18th May 1991 when the Somalilanders decided to withdraw from that union after thirty-first years of an unhappy marriage. .

Since then, 18th May is a national day that marks the revival of Somaliland. The Somalilanders in Somaliland and around the world use this opportunity to come together and celebrate this historical day. For the British Somalilanders, it is an occasion to present their culture and arts, and share the common values with the wider British society while celebrating diversity in order to foster community cohesion.

The programme includes play, speeches, dance, songs and music, and many great Somaliland artists such as Mohamed Ahmed (Kuluc), Xudaydi, Nimo Dagan, Nimo Yassin, Halwad, Nour Jama and much more, will perform on that day.

This unique event will give you the opportunity to learn more about Somaliland and its people as well as the historical link between UK and Somaliland. For your information, we will be selling tickets to cover the cost of this large event but also fund raise to further the objects of West London Somaliland Community. Admission for adult is £20, children under 12 go free and youngsters aged from 12 to 18 years pay £5 admission fee.

The celebration event will take place this year on the 16th May as the 18th is on Monday and most of the people are at work.

The venue is: Greenford Assembly Hall, Ruislip Road, Greenford, UB6 9EQ. The event will start at 4pm and finish at 11.30pm.
